Over the past few months I have struggled to find out who I am as a Digital Literacy Coach and what I could provide for my school. As of today, I feel that, with the help of other teachers, I have found a place in my school to help teach and grow the use of technology in my school and I can’t wait to continue to grow as a coach.
My first experience of seeing technology in action in my school was before Winter Break. We had a group of teachers that were interested in creating their own class website. A group of teachers hosted an after school workshop on creating a Weebly website. We all partnered up with a teacher and helped them, one on one, to navigate Weebly so they felt confident to continue their exploration over Winter Break. It was fantastic to see everyone working so hard to teach and learn Weebly. It was wonderful to see a group of teachers, both French and English, primary and intermediate, working together for the greater goal of keeping our parents informed about classroom activities through technology. Our school currently has 13 classroom websites, which has grown greatly from last year.
Another area where technology is growing in our school is through an after school tech talk set up by our Vice-principal. This will be a time where we can meet, talk and learn about different types of technology that we can use in the classroom. This group will be starting to meet in the next few weeks and I am looking forward to attending and learning even more.
Being a DL coach is a very positive experience. I am always excited to meet with other DL Coaches in round table discussions and at our DL evenings. The wealth of knowledge is motivating and makes me want to spread these ideas to others in my school. So in the end, I am enjoying my role as a DL coach and enjoy working with all of my staff to improve the use of technology in our school.
