Some of us first learned of Kahoot our first digital literacy event this year. We instantly were captured by the fun of it and our natural competitive natures were awakened! Here at Fripps in one of our classes students were reviewing what they learned about the different systems in the body. As an alternative to the teacher giving the review questions the students submitted their own questions to their teacher with possible answers to create their own review quizzes. The teacher then created a Kahoot quiz out of the questions. The students were buzzing with excitement to see their questions on the board and the sense of ownership was high. We also tried doing Kahoot in our Kindergarten classrooms. It was obviously much simpler and the questions needed to be read out, but we were able to have questions about initial letter sounds, popular literary characters, seasons, and guess the Christmas celebrity. Shortly after we began our principal came next door to see what all the commotion was about and was excited by how engaged the students were. Side note:To make this easier for the Kinderfriends we had the intermediate helpers create a home screen short cut to go straight to the Kahoot web page. After 20 minutes of trying to log in the first time, we wished we would have thought of it sooner! |
IMovie is a popular app and has been touched on by previous blogs but I wanted to highlight a few things. We often start teaching with the pre-loaded trailer where everything is formatted or 'cookie cutter’ molded for you. You just insert your text and video and you can have a sharp video in one or two blocks. Our grade 5’s have made IMovie’s of their reviews of the skeletal systems, Greek/Egyptian mythologies and All about Me. We first practiced an All about Me skit and then went to work. |
The Kinderfriends have been using Pic Collage to create “all about my number” collages. We ‘app smashed’ (ooh 5 dollar word alert) Pic Collage, Educreations (although any whiteboard app would do) and the Camera to create our collages. The Kinderfriends showed their numbers a variety of ways: numerals, objects, pictures, and fingers. We took pictures with the camera, screen shots of our work on the whiteboard and then spiffed it up in Pic Collage. Included are a few examples. |
