Know Thy Impact and Some Apps When asked what I do for a living I explain, with pride, that I am a teacher in the Langley School District. This statement is made with pride because I consistently witness teachers engaging in meaningful dialogue that often results in positive changes in their classrooms and or their schools, actions that demonstrate that we are an innovative, inspiring and unified learning community. The teachers I work with are quick to recognize needs in their classrooms, and schools, and the fluidity that these changes need to be addressed with. |
As a Digital Literacy Coach I thought it would be interesting to try and integrate the points most emphasized by Hattie with the use of technology in the classroom. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t see the use of technology in the classroom as a strategy, but as a tool to aid in making learning and teaching visible to students and teachers. In an email Mr. Hattie explained that, “There is a crude distinction between using technology for knowledge consumption (Ms Google instead of encyclopedias, PowerPoint instead of making things, etc.) and knowledge production – the latter has more hope than the former.” Two i-Pad apps that that promote the process of knowledge production are i-Movie and Educreations. |
The idea of using i-Movie can be overwhelming for a teacher who is in the substitution or augmentation stages of the SAMR scale, however, an easy way to explore this app without feeling like you are getting in over your head is to use the i-Trailer option. This option allows you to create short one-minute trailers that aid in the refining, creating and sharing of knowledge. To increase the ease of using this app Learning in Hand, with Toni Vincent, has created a number of templates that can be used, so it is literally a matter of drag and drop, a method most of us prefer! In this trailer the students were asked to sell the book. This is their first attempt at an i-trailer so now they will engage in peer editing with other groups, then work to refine their finished product. | |
